Magnesium .. The Miracle Mineral..
Magnesium, we all know is a mineral, an essential mineral for our bodies to work well. But what does that really mean? What does it do. And if we are deficient what symptoms should I be aware of?
I began to read more into it, as my own symptoms raised questions in my head. And as I’m an advocate of self healing, I had to read. Not pop a pill that my gp prescribed. It also genuinely excites me when I read the benefits of natural supplements, we live on a planet which provides us with all the medicine we require. Magnesium is one of those miracles.
The healing benefits of magnesium is actually a book in itself, and I don’t claim to be an expert, this small blog is a tiny glimpse into the health benefits of magnesium supplements and why it’s crucial for our wellbeing. If it only resonates or encourages you to look it up for yourself or to perhaps try the supplements I recommend later on, then it’s done it’s job. Assessing whether we are deficient in magnesium is actually quite difficult, tests aren’t very accurate as measuring magnesium in our system is assessed through blood work, saliva, and urine. None of which are satisfactory as most magnesium is stored in our bones/cells. It’s suggested that we simply assume everyone is magnesium deficient. Perhaps 10 % are not, therefore we can assume a large majority of men, women and children will benefit from magnesium supplementation.
LACK OF MAGNESIUM
Lack of magnesium can play havoc on our system. When deficient our system and cells deteriorate, they begin to die. Which can lead to many dis-eases of the body such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancers….even mild deficiency can lead to insomnia, anxiety, trembling, depression, the list goes on. Whereas high levels of magnesium has the reverse affect on the body, body physiology thrives, we perform on a higher level.
In short, magnesium is as vital as fresh air and water for healthy living..
“Magnesium is the lamp of life, all of life collapses around its loss. The realisation that magnesium is at the centre of life in chlorophyll should help us place magnesium in the temple where it deserves to be”
Studies have shown the importance of magnesium rich diets in emotional/behavioural health. Eating more magnesium reduced the incidence of attention problems, agitation and aggression. Therefore beneficial in ADHD. (This topic is a chapter in itself)
“Magnesium deficiency in children is characterised by excessive fidgeting, anxious restlessness, psychomotor instability and learning difficulties” Dr Mildred Seelig.
Magnesium has a calming effect on the nervous system and is considered the ‘anti-stress’ mineral and natural tranquilliser. Also used for people suffering with insomnia.
Many pharmaceutical drugs drive magnesium levels down, most prescribed drugs lead to a gradual depletion of vitamins and minerals. Here’s just a few examples of drugs that cause a depletion of magnesium in the body:
Phosphates (cola drinks)
MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE /OIL/SALTS
The good news is we can easily supplement our system with magnesium. It’s not expensive. And it really is a small step in helping yourself…
Magnesium oil is magnesium chloride and one of the most powerful medicines in the world. It’s name is a little deceiving as it doesn’t contain oil, but it can be used transdermally, directly onto skin, for massage, rub onto joints, elbows etc. it’s the most versatile forms of magnesium and can be administered in many ways.
A nice analogy is ‘what oil does for an engine, magnesium oil will do for your health.’
Transdermal methods is a wonderful quick and easy way for your body to absorb magnesium directly through the skin, using gels or sprays. Traditional methods, tablets or capsules get watered down and become less effective due to stomach acids and digestive enzymes before getting into the bloodstream. Bypassing this process means a greater percentage of ingredients gets straight to the bloodstream and where needed.
Transdermal magnesium therapy is wonderful for pain management. Combination of heat and magnesium chloride increases circulation and waste removal. The therapeutic effect of magnesium baths is to draw out inflammation, of the muscles and joints. Our skin being the largest organ has the ability to absorb, filter toxins and deliver nutrients to the body. When we apply (or soak in) mag chloride directly onto the skin it’s absorbed and gives instant relief to pain.
It doesn’t really get any easier to help yourself does it? Take a bath, with magnesium salts and reap the benefits. Or simply rub mag chloride spray or gel into areas inflamed or injured. For Arthritis, sports injuries, sciatica..
Simply add 1-2 cups of Magnesium Flakes to your bathtub. Soak for 20-30 minutes.
I hope some of this information is a little insight into the benefits of Magnesium supplements. It’s a large topic. But it’s a small step to helping yourself. And an easy one.
Sending love and healing..
